Some words of wisdom from DJ Rob Swift
“Even for an experienced DJ, the idea of composing a battle routine that’s worthy of flexing on a DMC or Red Bull 3Style stage may feel intimidating. That’s because it is! Composing a battle routine requires a different set of skills that go beyond the physicality of beat juggling or scratching, and you can’t intuitively compose music by entering commands into a software app like Serato. Instead, you must develop your intuition and acquire a keen sense of rapid feedback. In other words, can you instinctively build a routine based off the information you hear as a result of your movements on the turntables in real time?
What’s more, are you able to achieve this and still convey your own personality or do you just sound like the typical battle DJ? That’s why the first step toward becoming a competent battle DJ is to learn how to perform the 10 root movements of beat juggling, the 9 cornerstone scratches, and then understand how to articulate these bedrock techniques in a way that helps you stand out. Fortunately, with battle season just around the corner, this latest Training Camp tutorial gives you access to an hour plus long guide on composing your own battle routine!”
