TRAINING TIPS
Here is some sound advice on how to win the MUSIC M*A*S*H CHALLENGE.
1. Spend an adequate amount of time finding a collection of songs for your 6 minute set that resonate with people. Two weeks should be the maximum.
2. Your set should have a basic structure. Figure out a way to tell a sonic story with an intro, body and conclusion.
3. Avoid letting a song play longer than 30-45 seconds. This way, you can keep your audience engaged.
4. Perform for your allotted time or slightly less, BUT DO NOT GO OVER YOUR 6 MINUTE TIME LIMIT!
5. Move! Be active during your execution of the DJ techniques you’ve learned. Don’t just stand there looking like you’re taking a test. Have fun!
6. Your delivery must be impeccable so devote ample time to rehearsing. One full week should suffice. I suggest you block out Friday, Jan. 5th through Friday, Jan. 12 to practice your routine.
7. Give yourself at least 2 full days (Jan. 13th & 14th) to shoot your final entry. This way you’re not trying to film your entry video in a frenzied state the day of the submission (Jan. 15th).
8. You can scratch wherever, whenever you want but make sure you isolate one proper scratch solo that effectively showcases your style and technique for at least 20 seconds.
9. Adjust your mp3 volumes in Serato accordingly. You want your set to be heard at a reasonable level. Avoid cranking your sound so loud when you film, that it sounds distorted!
10. This challenge is an opportunity to make a name for yourself so TRAIN SERIOUSLY!
To the students who’ve made the decision to participate, good luck and have fun! If you’re on the fence, don’t be. Competing in our Brolic Army DJ School challenges is all about continuing to move forward in your DJ journey. Contests like these teach you a lot about yourself. They push you creatively which is the whole point of DJing, to tap into your inventiveness. Win or lose, only good can come out of taking the dare!
